Years Fly Fishing

32 Years and counting....

A Bit About Chris

Chris has been immersed in fly fishing for more than thirty years, beginning in 1994 and developing through school angling clubs at Pretoria Boys High and Michaelhouse. His passion for the sport has grown into a lifelong commitment to development, coaching and leadership. Today, Chris blends his fly‑fishing expertise with a professional background in training, communication and youth development, creating a unique mix of technical skill and people‑focused mentorship.

Leadership in South African Fly Fishing

Chris currently serves as President of the South African Fly Fishing Association (SAFFA), a role he has held since August 2025. His leadership follows five years of service on the SAFFA General Committee and includes assisting the national selection panel for both the Youth and Senior Protea Teams.

Before becoming President, Chris played a key role in stabilising and rebuilding SAFFA’s Youth Division as National Youth Coordinator, restoring trust, improving structures and running multiple national trials and development camps.

International Team Experience

Chris has led South Africa’s youth teams at two consecutive World Youth Fly Fishing Championships:

  • 22nd FIPS Mouche World Youth Fly Fishing Championship, Idaho Falls, USA Protea Youth Team Manager
    Team result: Bronze Medal
This was only the second team medal South Africa has earned on the world stage in more than two decades.

  • 23rd FIPS Mouche World Youth Fly Fishing Championship, Ballybofey, Ireland Protea Youth Team Manager
    Team result: Fourth Place
A strong follow‑up performance that reinforced South Africa’s growing presence in international youth competition.

Provincial Development

As former Chairman of Gauteng North Fly Fishing, Chris guided the province through a period of major growth and renewal. Membership increased by seventy percent, junior participation expanded significantly, and long‑standing internal challenges were resolved through improved collaboration and structure.

Coaching, Training and Youth Development

Chris’s professional career in learning and development directly strengthens his coaching approach. He has facilitated numerous youth training camps, national trials and development programmes, working alongside senior Protea anglers to grow the next generation of competitive fly fishers.

Corporate Fly‑Fishing Experiences

Chris has spent more than a decade designing and delivering premium fly‑fishing experiences for leading South African companies. These events blend outdoor engagement with professional development, fly‑casting instruction and team‑building.

Personal Connection to the Sport

Fly fishing is deeply rooted in Chris’s family life. He enjoys spending time on the water with his wife Amy, who has represented South Africa at three World Fly Fishing Championships, and their son Rory, who is developing his own passion for the sport.
